Eston McClintock born born near Petersburg, Somerset Co., PA October 8, 1829 and died in De Soto, IA March 1, 1909. He married Hulda Rush on February 5, 1853 in Somerset Co., PA. She was born March 23, 1827 and died January 9, 1913 in Iowa. Eston served in the Civil War in the 27th Iowa Infantry, Company I; enlisted 8/15/1862; mustered 9/5/1862; discharged for disability 1/17/1863 Jackson, TN In his pension application, in Deposition "A" on Sept. 8, 1886 at Newton, in Jasper County, Iowa, Eston McClintock says he is a 57 year old farmer whose postal address is Fairmount, Iowa. He testifies: "I am the identical Eston McClintock who served in Company "I" 27th Iowa vol. from August 15th 1862 to January 14, 1863. I was never in any other service, either military or naval, of the United State s. I was born near Petersburg, Somerset Co., PA and lived in that vicinity until 1854 when I came to Rossville, Allamakee Co., Iowa, and lived there until 1865, when I came to Fairmount Jasper Co. I owa, and have been here ever since. While living in the Petersburg Pa. community I was intimately known by Basil Bird of Petersburg, Henry Bird of Petersburg, Noah Bird of Petersburg, Thomas Ream(?) of Draketown, Jackson Coburn of Somerset, Jacob Stamier of Harnettsville(?)" "At Rossville, Allamakee Co Iowa I lived either in town or within thrice miles of town all the time. The persons there who were intimate with me were Jackson Mitchell, who knew me from boyhood, William Stull, a comrade, knew me in Pennsylvania, and William Rush; he and I grew up boys together." Others who testified on his behalf: • William L. Rush, 58 year old carpenter and farmer stated, “I am not related to claimant. My sister was married to him: but they are divorced now. I have no pecuniary interest in this claim.” • William Klein, 70 year old farmer stated, “Claimant is my brother-in-law or rather he used to be my brother-in-law. His wife and him are now divorced.” • Isaac Woodmansee, 57 year old farmer stated, “I am a brother-in-law of claimants, or rather I was. He married my wife’s sister, but they are now divorced.” His wife was Susan Rush. • Jackson Mitchell, 69 year old post master stated, “Am a brother-in-law to claimant. Claimant was one of the handiest (or hardiest) men to cradle in harvest work that you could find.” Children living in the home of Eston and Hulda are: Mary Ellen McClintock born Dec 5, 1854 Married Samuel McReynolds Alishea Jane McClintock born Apr 15, 1855 Married Robert Clinton Taylor Jessie Milton McClintock born Mar 20, 1859 Married Madge Hart Ulysses Grant McClintock born Feb 5, 1864 Married Nancy Hummel James Hiram McClintock born Feb 10, 1867 Married Delphia Montgomery Minnie Belle McClintock born Oct 17, 1868 Married Charles Hummel Problem 1: The first two children are born too close to have the same biological mother. (Just over 4 months separate Mary Ellen and Alishea Jane's birth.) One or the other of the two girls is not Hulda's daughter. As I am descended from Alishea Jane, this is of great interest to me! Any ideas cousins? Problem 2: Eston's parents were Alexander McClintock and Polly Bird. Eston also had a sister named Elizabeth McClintock who married Jefferson Rush, Hulda's brother. I suspect Alexander is a grandson of Alexander McClintock and Mary Eston, but can prove nothing yet. Do any of the names in this message ring a bell? I have extensive info/documentation and am willing to share. -Scott Taylor Notify Administrator about this message?
