The Father of GKD McClelland/McLellan/McClellan is James McClellan who married Ann Harrison, daughter of Burr Harrison and Elizabeth Dargan. It is believed James McClellan who married Ann Harrison was born in Scotland, and lived for a time in Charleston, South Carolina. No ship records have been found as of yet and no records as to who his parents were have surfaced.
James McClellan's Will is on File in Richland County, South Carolina, naming his "Dear Children: Jane, James and George D." He died 4 December 1817, leaving these 3 young children, ages 1, 5 and 6 (approx.). His wife Ann Harrison died the previous year in 1816, 3 weeks after young George D. was born. Will probated 6 Dec 1817. Executors of Will: Benjamin T Harrison, Jr. (his brother-in law) and Andrew Wallace, who I have found to be a prominent businessman in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina in the early and middle 1800's.
Andrew Wallace was a Scotsman, born in Scotland and a friend of James McClellan, and while circumstantial evidence, reinforces the idea that James was born in Scotland.
Since both James McClellan and his wife died in 1816 and 1817, these three children needed to be raised by relatives or friends. It is not known for certain who raised these children, but it may have been Benjamin T Harrison or other Harrison siblings of Ann Harrison.
The relationship between these three children can be proved through census records.
Jane is Jane Dorcas McClellan (various spellings) born 31 December 1811, died 10 November 1899, Buried Sumter City Cemetery, Sumter County, South Carolina. She married Franklin J. Moses, who when he died on 6 March, 1877, was Chief Justice of the South Carolina Supreme Court. Their son by the same names as his father was the Governor of South Carolina in the 1870's.
James - James Burr McLelland, b. 4 July 1812, Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, died 12 December 1880, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas.
He married Eliza Gibson Head, b. abt 1813, South Carolina, died 6 Dec 1879, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. They are both buried in the Bryan City Cemetery, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas.
This couple were first cousins. James' mother was Ann Harrison daughter of Burr Harrison and Elizabeth Dargan. Eliza's Mother was Susannah Gibson Harrison, also a daughter of Burr and Elizabeth Harrison. Eliza's Father was William Woodward Head, born son of Richard Head and Sarah Newport of Virginia.
James and Eliza McLelland married 4 July 1833 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina, had their first child named George D. McLelland in about 1834 and subsequently traveled to Winston County, Mississippi and lived in Noxubee County, MS as well staying there through the Civil War. James B. McLelland was Captain of a Home Guard during the War. In 1870, this family is found in Bryan, Brazos County, Texas where he was County Treasurer when he died. This couple had 11 children. I have the family line on down to current people on this line, living in Texas and California and places in between. Name spelled: McLelland.
George D. - George Kendrick Dougherty McLelland - He married Margaret Mayrant 6 September 1837 in Mississippi. They are found in 1840 on the Noxubee County, MS U.S. Census record. In 1860 GKD was a merchant in Mobile, Mobile Co, Alabama. Margaret is found living without GKD on the U.S. 1860 Mobile, Alabama Census with 8 children. Margaret can not be found after the 1860 census, and it is not known what happened to her. If someone knows, that would be great to find out. Children were scattered by the 1870 census, probably married. Their eldest James P was reported killed in the Civil War.
Margaret Mayrant was the daughter of Dr. James Norvell Mayrant and Mary Elizabeth Potts. Dr. James Mayrant and family lived in Sumter County, SC in 1820 and in 1841 bought land in Choctaw County, MS. They are found on the Noxubee County State Census of 1853.
How these 3 children of James McClellan and Ann Harrison are linked together is as follows:
GKD's daughter Rosalie "Rosa" McLelland was found living with in her Aunt Jane (McLelland) Moses home in 1860 at the age of 16 years of age in Sumter, Sumter County, South Carolina. Rosa married William George Gibbs and one of their sons was Paul Mayrant Gibbs. This establishes the relationship between Jane Dorcas McLelland and GKD McLelland.
James Burr's eldest son, George D. is found living with his Uncle GKD's family on the 1850 Census in Mobile, Mobile, Alabama. This establishes the relationship between James Burr McLelland and GKD McLelland and because of the above - sister Jane Dorcas McLelland.
James Burr named one of his son's "Franklin Moses McLelland" after his sister Jane's husband, Franklin J. Moses.
On the 1870 Census in Mobile, Alabama, GKD's children, Beulah McLelland Age 21 and George McLelland age 17 are living with Robert Woodrup Mayrant and his wife Fanny V Mayrant. Robert was GKD's wife Margaret's brother.
There is more to this family line, but I wanted to share what I have found out on the Mayrant's, Gibbs, GKD McLelland to help others in their research. More importantly particular this line of McLelland's has not been researched very extensively and is missing from the McLelland DNA records on the DNA sites for families of this name. I plan on contacting living McLelland relatives to see if they will volunteer for a DNA test to confirm what "other" McLelland (various spellings) line we may have come from.
GLD McClelland was the son of Andrew McClellan of Bladen County, North Carolina - NOT GKD McLelland.

My link to this line is my maternal grandmother, Othello McLelland who married Joel Frank Doss. Othello was the daughter of Franklin Moses McLelland, who married Nancy Catherine "Nannie" Phillips. Franklin Moses McLelland was the son of James Burr McLelland and Eliza Gibson Head.
