Hello - I have come across a Charles McClellan(d) who was an immediate neighbor to my George Bruton in Orangeburgh/Barnwell District, SC. He is listed next to George in the 1800 census and appears in property records over the next 10 years near George. He last appears with George in the will of Peleg Wood Chase in Barnwell District on 26 February 1810. George, Slocum Church, and Sion Horn were witnesses. Peleg left his estate to his wife Ann and named Ann and "my trusty friend" Charles McClellan as executors.
They lived on the south side of the Edisto River, just east of present-day Bamberg, SC. All of that area was originally Orangeburgh District, but the area south of the river became Barnwell District.
Perhaps this will be of help to you, or at least give you another place in SC to look. If in your McClellan(d)s you come across any Brutons, I'd appreciate the info! I am looking at the neighbors to see if there are any records on my Brutons in records about those neighbors.
