Karen,
I have quite a bit of info that may help you. I'll contact you thru email to exchange more detailed thoughts. Here is some info:
There was a John McClorg who applied for a PA Land Warrant in Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA in 1767 and 1769. There are entries in the Guinston Presbyterian Church records in 1776 for a John McClorg family and one for a William McClorg family in 1777.
There are some entries in the early York Co tax records for McClorg, McClurg and McClung in the townships of Chanceford, Hopewell, Peach Bottom and Fawn. This area is southern York Co bordered to the south by Maryland.
The Ewing name shows up far more. They lived in the same area. Focus on Fawn and Chanceford (and later Lower Chanceford) Twps in your search. John Cuthbertson was a Presbyterian minister who traveled a large area from 1751 thru 1791. He kept a diary. These baptisms are listed to children of an Alexander Ewing under the "Lower Chanceford Society", 1771-Mary, 1775-James, 1782-Thomas, 1780-Robert, 1784-Mary and 1784-Alexander. There is an entry for a child that died in 1780 (listed as '2nd child') and an entry for the same year of an Alexander Ewing who was ordained as an elder.
Early day York Co also included present day Adams Co (split in 1800). There are also some baptisms of interest in Cuthbertson's diary for that area and some meeting places just to the west of current day Adams Co in current day Cumberland and Franklin counties. Rocky Springs (just north of Chambersburg in Franklin Co) 1755-Elizabeth to John McClung, 1778-Mary to William Ewing and a reference to a 'H. Ewin'. Big Spring (about 10 mi north of Chambersburg in Cumberland Co) 1753-Esther to Jo. McClung and 1758-Mathew & 1762-Charles both to John McClung. Marsh Creek (just north of Gettysburg in Adams Co) 1771-Henry to John Ewing.
Also, tax records for Fawn Twp, York Co in 1830 list an Alexander and a James Ewing. There may be more tax records but I have not checked them.
You should also pay attention to the Harford Co (MD) Methodist Circuit Riders info. There are many Ewings listed. There is a Rev. Alexander Ewing and a Rev James Ewing. The marriage of William McCleary and Martha Ewing in 1809 is listed in these records.
All of the above info is available at the York County Heritage Trust @ www.yorkheritage.com
Finally, you should also contact John McClarey. He has made several posts in this forum. His ancestor, John McClarey (b.1765) married Elizabeth Ewing (daughter of James) at Big Spring Presbyterian church in 1787. According to Mr. McClarey, his ancestors moved to GA and then TN. He currently resides in Decatur, IL.
