William McCleary - Civil War
Posted by: Linda Stewart (ID *****2278) Date: January 06, 2004 at 21:18:14

Looking for info on William McCleary who died during the Civil War, but not as a result of battle. According to family stories, he was thrown from his horse and hit a tree.

He married Martha Basket and they had William Edmond McCleary, b. 1 Mar 1859, Fayetteville, Ark. There may also have been two sisters, possibly Anna and Fernie? Family history says that after William was killed, Martha re-married and the new husband (name unknown) didn't want Edmond, so he was sent out to fend for himself when he was but 7 years old.

Edmond was in Douglas Co. MO in 1860 census with a family named Potter. He married in 1878 in Ozark Co., MO. d. in 1948 in Lincoln Co., OK.

Anyone know about this McCleary family?

Thanks, Linda
