Am at dead stop regarding my James McClane, b. Scotland (or Ireland) abt. 1817, died 1853 in Rockford, IL. Married Ellen Gorman(ly) (b. Ireland) in 1851 in Rockford, Winnebago, IL. I have the marriage record. Also, on death certificate of his daughter Anna, his name is given as her father. Was father to two children:
Mary Ellen McClane, b. 1853 in Rockford, IL
Anna McClane, b. 1854 in Rockford, IL
He evidently died very young -- no records in Rockford at that time were kept, so do not have accurate death date. Unable locate any other McClane's in Winnebago, but feel there must have been some. Marriage was after 1850 census, so have no census record to tie him in. His wife, Ellen, married shortly after his death to James Woods in 1854 in Rockford and had more children.
Daughter Mary Ellen McClane married Michael Stapleton and settled in Chicago. Daughter Anna McClane married Dennis O'Brien and settled in PA.
