(McLard/MacLeod connection in VA 1767)

Hello, (McLard/MacLeod connection in VA 1767)
I am tracking down a family rumour that our family name was possibly changed from MacLeod to McLard that was posted on another site. The name change may have occured in the mid 1700's when Daniel McLard left Scotland a few steps of the law and changed his name in the process (so the story goes). Our oldest ancestor that we have documented was Daniel McLard who died in Prince Edward Co. VA in 1774. He purchased land in VA in 1767, however no other information further back can be found as of yet.
The If anyone has heard any similar stories or has any info that can point me in the right direction I would greatly appreciate the assistance.
