Hello Pam and Cynthia,
In the 1880 census, I have the following family group in Philadelphia:
Jno Palmer, white male 43, engineer, born in Ireland and parents from Ireland
Elizabeth, white female 38, wife, married, keeping house, born in Ireland of Irish parents;
Elizabeth, white female 20, daughter, single, at home, born in Phila to Irish parents
Harry, white male son 17 single brushmaker, born in Phila to Irish parents
McCaughin, Hugh, white male 46 brother in law [he is the brother of Elizabeth the wife of Jonathan], married, engineer, Irish of Irish parents
McCaughin, Annie, white female 22, Hugh’s daughter, machine operator, born in Phila to Irish parents
Donnielly, Jno., white male 26 nephew, single, fireman, born in Phila to Irish parents
McDonald, Elizabeth, white female 19, single, boarder, stocking weaver, b. in Phila to Irish parents
Comments:Where is Hugh’s wife?
In the Palmer family Bible, there is an entry showing that Hugh died November 11, 1907 aged 75 years. That ties in with Pam's information - so he stayed with his sister Elizaeth's family in Philadelphia for some period of time with his daughter Annie, before moving to the midwest.
I did a census search for Hugh McCaughin for the years 1834 to 1920 and found several listings:
1870:Hugh Mccaughin Farmington, Fulton, IL born abt 1830IrelandWhiteMale
1880:Hugh Mccaughin Sarah Mccaughin Liberty, Warren, IA born abt 1832 IrelandSelf
Sarah Mccaughin Hugh Mccaughin Liberty, Warren, IA abt 1835 IrelandWife
Alexander Mccaughin Hugh Mccaughin,Sarah Mccaughin Liberty, Warren, IA abt 1865 IllinoisSon
1895 Iowa State census:Hugh McCaughin 62IrelandWWarrenFourth Ward
1900:Hugh Mccaughin Indianola, Warren, Iowa born abt 1833IrelandWhite Head
Hugh Mccaughin Philadelphia Ward 15, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania born abt 1873IrelandWhite Coachman
1920:Hugh MccaughinNemaha, Johnson, Nebraska born abt 1860 Ireland White
I hope that is more helpful than confusing.I can certainly tell you the line of his sister Elizabeth, who married Jonathan Palmer.I have no known pictures of Hugh McCaughin.Do you?I live outside of Philadelphia - so perhaps could find what seems to be Hugh's first marriage (if?)and the birth of daughter Annie.Let me know if you have any of that.
