My family moved from Antrim to Scotland in the 1850s. The name is recorded as McKechnie in Scotland. There are 50 Irish born McKechnies in Scotland in the 1881 census, yet virtually no record of the name in Irish records before Civil Registration. There is also a tradtion that the nme was changed in the 19th century - from Mac Eacharna, MacEachain or something? I have also learned that the MacEachens and MacGeachys of Kintyre changed their name to McKechnie or to McCaughan (the latter if they went to Ulster). Do you have any records of this link with McKechnie?
