My search for the origin of the McCathern surname here in Canada has turned out to be a rather "cool" trail, with the exception of what I was told by my father. He stated that our surname was changed in the late 1800's from a spelling similar to your's, that being William McCaugen(my great-grandfather) this could be different due to the litteracy of the time.
