Not really much beyond what I've given you....
Our family legend was that 2 brothers, or 2 brothers and a sister came from Ireland. (family legend from descendants of Thomas McCaslin.)Apparently in the 60's, my grandmother met and exchanged genealogy info with someone descended from Oliver, and got the same legend (2 brothers) - and that one moved to the States....
Well, Oliver DID move to the states, but he was in his 79's or greater(was in Ontario in 1911, but died in Utah in 1922).
I know that Thomas McCaslin and Ellen McCaslin are brother and sister (and have some dates etc for them.)They were in Canada from before 1846ish because I have records of them in Canada. In 1852, they were both living with a Jane Caslin (they were also Caslin in that census) who was old enough to be their mother.
From a site I was looking at, Oliver's mom was supposed to be a Jane Wilson.(I can see how Jane and Anne are similar enough to be confused...)I have the dad's name too, but can't remember it from the top of my head.Richard I think. This was a compilation site, and so I don't know where the info came from.
The oldest Thomas could have possibly been when they immegrated was about 20 (I'm not sure of his birthdate) from the time of his birthdate, to the time of the first Canadian record I have.Oliver is about 5-7 years younger. But from the date that was given by Oliver (or his family) for his immigration (1832), he would have been a baby at most, and Thomas would have been maybe 7 or so.Ellen would have been around 10.1832 is, of course, a year that a major potato famine occured, although not the huge famine with the potatoe blight that was in 1847.
I haven't found Oliver anywhere in the 1851/2 census.
I have no proof that Oliver and Thomas are brothers - just some of the info seems to fit nicely. However, they ARE different religions, and do live a fair distance apart in Ontario.....But if they ARE brothers, than Oliver's mom would still be alive (but widowed) in January of 1852.
I have also seen a mention of a John McCaslin of that time (that would have been too old to be one of Thomas' sons - one of which was named John). He was a witness for a christening, I think for one of Ellen's kids....I can't find him anywhere.
I have seen an image of Oliver's death registration (and his wife's Mary Cooke)I'm just trying to find a bit more of his info, hoping to find the connection.
(If I had enough money, and could find an appropriate male descendant of Oliver McCaslin, it would almost be worth a DNA test to see if Thomas and Oliver were closely related...)
(btw - both Thomas and Ellen spent time in insane assylums - you might want to find that Oliver was NOT related!LOL)
