William McCasland, RW Pensioner #W.21790, was married to ELEANOR, his wife, 30 Mar 1781, according to his pension file. We have searched for 45 years for her maiden name. At last, we have found it! Her msiden name was ELEANOR McCULLOUGH. She was born in Ireland in 1757, and she died 7 Oct 1851, in Sangamon County, IL, where she is buried in McDevitt Cemetery, now abandoned. Her marker states, "ELENOR McCASLAND, Wf. of William McCasland, Died Oct. 7, 1851, Aged 94 Yrs".

Their daughter Susannah McCasland, married Samuel Snodgrass 24 Jun 1805, in Augusta County, VA. The youngest son of Samuel and Susannah was John M. Snodgrass. Several sources have shown his full name to be JOHN McCULLOUGH SNODGRASS. This led us to the Bondservant Record, "Philadelphia Indentures, 1771-1773". The following entry is found there: "17 Mar 1772, ELEANOR McCULLOUGH, Ireland, Indentured to John Tolbert or his assigns, Philadelphia, Servant, 3 Years, Pound 12.10".

She was thus 15 years old when she was bound out. The 1850 Census of Sangamon County, IL,582/582, P. 37, shows her birthdate as 1757, in Ireland.

Persistance pays! We knew we would find it someday!
