Dear Paulette,
I know it's been quite some time since we last spoke, but I have found some new information and wanted to pass it along to you.
1880 Census - Buffalo Township, Kershaw Co. SC
Jesse McCaskill, Head, age 33, b. 1847 SC Farmer
L. McCaskill, Wife, age 26, b. 1854 SC Keeps House
W. McCaskill, Daughter, age 10, b. 1870 SC
B. McCaskill, Daughter, age 9, b. 1871 SC
L. McCaskill, Son, age 7, b. 1873 SC
K. McCaskill, Daughter, age 2, b. 1878 SC
*This is the family of your grandparents Jesse and Letha. They are listed as "mulatto" in this record. The census shows your grandfather, Logan McCaskill, and both Jesse and Letha's parents are stated to be born in SC.
1900 Census - Stokes Bridge, Darlington Co. SC
Jesse McCaskill, Head, age 60, b. Apr 1840 SC Farm laborer
Letha McCaskill, Wife, age 47, b. Mar 1853 SC Keeps house
Elisabeth McCaskill, Daughter, age 13, b. May 1887 SC
James E. McCaskill, Son, age 9, b. May 1891 SC
Mollie McCaskill, Daughter, age 7, b. Apr 1893 SC
John Jackson, (?), age 14, b. Mar 1886 SC
*(Taken 15 June 1900, Family 210, Sheet 11B) - In this census, Jesse states that he and Letha have been married for 33 years. Letha says she has had 3 children, with 3 still living (but this is an error since we know she had more children).
* Both James E. McCaskill and John Jackson are listed as farm laborers, but I cannot decipher what relationship John Jackson is to this family.
* Jesse says in this record that his father was born in NC and his mother in SC. Both of Letha's parents are stated to have been born in SC (same as 1880 census).
* The household in this census is listed as "black".
1910 Census - Lee Co. SC
Auras Doby, age 65, b. 1845
Lottie Doby, age 55, b. 1855
Della McKaskill, age 35, b. 1875
Howard McKaskill, age 13, b. 1897
Chiel McKaskill, age 10, b. 1900
Amelia Norton, age 35, b. 1875
* And here are your Doby grandparents in 1910. Della, Hilliard and Chief were either living with them or visiting them when the census was taken.
* I do not know the relationship of Amelia Norton to the family.
* Notice that Mary Leather is not listed either. If she was born by 1910, then she should be listed with Della. I still have not found Logan in 1910, so I don't know where he was or if Mary was with him.
* If Mary was born after the census was taken, she could have still been born in 1910. Della could have been pregnant at the time.. but I don't have access to see when they were recorded.
If, as you say, Della died circa 1911-1912, I doubt there will be a death certificate. South Carolina didn't officially record deaths until 1915. But Logan should certainly have one, and I will look for his and see if I can find it. If his burial information is listed, Della may be buried where he is.
I will post here if and when I find more information. I do have the microfilm copy of the 1880 Census for Jesse McCaskill's family, if you'd like to have it. I can send it via email.. just let me know.
Kindest regards,
Isabelle
