Eugene COYLE was born February 12, 1847 in Drumsnat Parish in County Monaghan, Ireland. His Parents were Owen COYLE and Mary (McCARVILLE) who reside in Cornasoo Townland. His siblings were Patrick, James, Dan, Mary, and Ann COYLE. Two first cousins were Fr. Dan and Fr. Eugene McGINNITY who emigrated to the USA in 1849 and grew up at Willow Springs, Lafayette County, WI. Their parents were Alice(McCARVILLE) and Owen McGINNITY. Mary and Alice were sisters. Eugene was a student at Macather College in County Monaghan and came to the US when he was about 20 years old. He completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Francis Seminary at Milwaukee, WI. Fr. Coyle was ordained at St. John's Church in St. Louis, MO on March 8, 1873. While he was back in Ireland in 1883, he arranged for the construction of a monument in the old Drumsnat Cemetery located near Smithboro. It reads, "Erected by the Rev. Eugene COYLE, Pastor of St. Patrick's Church in St. Louis in memory of his mother Mary, the beloved wife of Owen COYLE, Cornasoo w.d.t.l. March 16, 1871 aged 68 years. Patrick COYLE, Naghill, d. 25th Aug 1911, his wife Catherine d. 1st Jan 1925, their son James d. 13th Dec 1933, his wife Mary d. 8th March 1953. The archives of the Archdiocese of St . Louis lists Fr. COYLE's assignments: 1873-75 Pastor -- Edina, MO 1875-76 Pastor -- St. Paul's Church, Centre, Rolls Co, MO 1876-83 Pastor -- St. Patrick's Church, Clarke Co, MO 1883-84 (one source says he was in Ireland & Europe) 1884-85 Assistant -- St. Patrick's Church, St. Louis, MO 1885 Assistant -- St. Louis Cathedral (now known as "Old Cathedral". New Cathedral built 1908) 1886 - 1915 Pastor -- Old Cathedral 1915-32 Pastor -- St. Peter's Church, Kirkwood, MO Sept 9, 1935 died and was buried at St. Peter's Cemetery, Kirkwood, St. Louis Co, MO Notify Administrator about this message?
