Pictures of Darby McCarty’s Bible

In memory of Sharlie Cope Hill 21 Feb 1902 – 15 Jun 1992
She kept the Bible safe for years and shared it with the world.

The real treasure for Darby McCarty’s genealogy is his Bible, which is located in the East Tennessee History Center 601 S. Gay Street Knoxville, TN 37902, a part of the Lawson McGhee Library.

This bible is the only source showing Darby and Hannah as the parents of their eleven children. Without this single book Darby would be just another McCarty in the Frederick/Shenandoah County, Virginia records. With the Sunderland letter mistakenly calling Darby a brother of James, we might have never known Darby is actually his father. It’s even worse for some of Darby and Hannah’s daughters, as there is no other record of them in the area at all. We are all lucky this family treasure has survived for 248 years, 1762 - 2010.

In the summer of 2009 I was able to visit the library and photographed the Bible. Wanting to share these pictures with those who are interested in seeing them I have put them online. No new information was gained from the pictures but they are fun to look at- it would be nice to know who practiced their ABC’s by writing them in the Bible.

Two pages with family information on them have been cut from the Bible and are in-between pieces of paperboard; I didn’t touch these pages. A third page with William McCarty’s children is missing.

The following link is to a picture of the bible page listing the children of Darby and Hannah McCarty with their ages; at the top of the page it reads “Thomas Hamblen was married to a daughter of William McCarty”. Note Thomas Hamblen was a son of Hannah (McCarty) Hamblen, William McCarty’s sister. Seems to me someone didn’t approve of this marriage between cousins.

On the other side of the above page are the children of Gambile and Polly his wife.

On the next page are the children of Elizabeth and Thomas Hamblen.

On the other side of this page is what is left of the children of James McCarty.

These pictures of Darby McCarty’s Bible were taken by Sally Polhemus, Special Materials Librarian, East Tennessee History Center. They were sent to me by Connie Fenn.

If you are going to the library to see the Bible you need to call ahead and ask to see it.
