My connection to the McCARTY family is Eliza McCARTY b. 1770c, D. 1820, 1st marriage to John STEWART, 2nd to William McCLUSKEY.Unfortunately, I haven't found the paper trail connecting her to the proper parents.A descendant the the Stewart Newsletter provides the father's name as John and not Samuel as in the Commemorative Biography Records of Wash. Co., Pa.
Notes from my database:
The Commemorative Biography Records of Wash. Co., Pa, 1893, Part 1 & II, pg. 229 states, "Eliza J. Criss, widow of Rittenhouse Criss, was born in Brooke Co., WV Aug 10, 1835.She was a dau of Robert Stewart whose father, Samuel Stewart, emigrated from Scotland and located on Robinson's run, Washington Co., Penn., and there was united in marriage to Elizabeth McCarty, a lady of Irish ancestry.Of the children born to them six lived to maturity, namely:Charles, George, John, Robert, Sarah and Mary, all now deceased, leaving numberous descendants scattered through different parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania.
John was the earliest pioneer of the family name McCarty who settled in Robinson Twp and reared a family of children. The History of Washing ton Co., PA, to commemorate the 200 year of Am. Independence. Crumrine's History of Wash.Co., PA list the family of this John McCARTY.
Pages 850-865 of Crumrine's Mt. Pleasant Twp., Washington Co., PA History list the following:John McCarty emigrated to what is now Washington Co. about the year 1773.He located on a tract of land at the head of Cherry Run Valley. The farm is now owned by Robert Farrar. He was an energetic, hard-working pioneer and in the course of a few years had made an extensive improvement. It was not until Feb. 13, 1786, that Mr. McCarty took out a warrant for his land which was surveyed to him the 10th of June the same year under the name of "Rhodes" and contained 300 acres. The first cabin was built a little east of where the dwelling-house of Mr. Farrar now stands. He lived here all his days and died here.He had 5 sons, Timothy, John, James, Samuel, and Robert, and a dau. Cassia, who married William Elder, and settled on the west part of Midway village. He died and the property was sold to J. M. Clark, Esq.She is now living in Butler, PA.Timothy, the eldest son of John McCarty, Sr. was born on the homestead in 1775, and when he arrived at maturity his father gave him 107 acres, part of the home tract. He married a daughter of Thomas McConnell of Robinson Twp., and lived on the place til his death.John his only son, inherited the place.
Supposedly, John McCARTY settled on 100 acres of the home tract given to him by his father. He sold it in 1835 to John, his nephew & son of brother, Timothy; and moved to Ohio.According to Nicholas Criss (a descendant), John McCarty settled 1773 in Mount Pleasant Twp., adjoining Cecil Twp. where the Stewarts lived. His descendents bearing that name are probably still to be found in the neighborhood of Midway and McDonald.
The 1810 Washington Co., Cecil Twp., PA Census list John's family of 1 m21-45, 1f-10, 1 f16-20, total 3.
