Sue,
If you take another look at the 1850 Choctaw County, Ala., census (page 197B) I believe you will find that Joseph was Joseph W. McCarty, not Joseph N. McCarty.Joseph W. McCarty, age 38, born in Tennessee; was enumerated in 1850 with R.W. McCarty, age 30, born in Virginia, probably his wife, and children Joseph E., 9; Emmit H., 8; Ann B. 4, and Richard S. 11 months, all born in Alabama.
This Joseph W. McCarty appears to me to be the Joseph McCarty who married Rebecca W. Jones 23 Oct. 1838, Marengo County, Ala.
I believe this Joseph W. McCarty and wife Rebecca W. were featured in the squabble over the estate of Joseph F. McCarty that took place in Lamar County, Texas, in the early 1850s, and that this Joseph W. McCarty was one of Joseph F. McCarty's sons.
Despite many searches, I have not found Joseph W. McCarty and family in the 1860 census.
I believe, however, that the Joseph McCarty, age 61, born in Tennesse, enumerated in the 1870 Bienville Parish, La., census (page 73B) was this Joseph W. McCarty. Enumerated in his family in 1870 were wife "Rabeca," 49, born in Virginia; and his apparent children Richard, 19; Ann, 21; William, 16; Cidney, 13; Katie; Robert 1; Elizabeth, 12 (domestic-black)
I think Joseph W. McCarty was the Joseph McCarty, age 72, born in Tennessee, enumerated in the 1880 Hardin County, Texas, census (page 430D) along with sons William, age 26, born in Alabama; and Sidney, age 22, born in Texas.Joseph's parents were born in Illinois, according to that census, and William and Sidney's mother was born in Virginia.
I have no idea how or if this Joseph W. McCarty fits into the Young McCarty line.
I am puzzled about the report that Joseph W. McCarty's parents were born in Illinois.Jacob McCarty, evidently the father of Joseph F. McCarty, did refer in 1811 tohisland claims in Illinoy County.
I think this may have been a reference to Illinois County, Virginia, which was created 1778 from Augusta County lands beyond the Ohio River.Virginia ceded this land to the United Staes in 1784.It later became part of the Old Northwest Territory.
I wonder if Jacob F. McCarty served in the American Revolution and got a military bounty warrant for land in Illinois County.
