McCarty Origin
Carthach, was a king of EĆ³ghanacht Chaisil (in effect, ruler of all Munster in Ireland), who died in 1045 A.D. His son was Muiredach mac Carthach, which means "Muiredach son of Carthach". He was the first of his race to assume the name of "MacCarthaigh", which sounds the same as the Gaelic "mac Carthach". The surname was later anglicised to MacCarthy and its other variations.
