McCartt Mystery, Morgan County, TN
Posted by: Dennis Aslinger (ID *****6366) Date: January 03, 2003 at 15:03:32

A year or two ago I found a field stone in Elizabeth Cemetery, faintly carved with the following: John McCartt son of Jas and Rebecca McCartt b. FEB 5, 1855 d. MAR 30, 1855 aged 1 month an 25 days.

The stone lies flat near the bottom of the hill, just left of where the steps climb up from the road. This must be the child of Rev. James Madison McCartt and his wife Rebecca Lewallen. However, the date of birth conflicts with that of James & Rebecca's son William Harrison McCartt, b. 27 MAY 1855. This stone is easily overlooked. I struggled to find it a second time when I returned to confirm the date (after I discovered the discrepancy).
