Various children changed their names to Mcarthur, others stayed as McCartney, while their parents, John (b.1826) & Agnes nee: McLay (c.1829), changed their names about. Their children from 1852 to 1866 were Mcarthurs as younger children were born in & McCartney stayed from the older children, right down to their birth, death & marriage certs.
