Rev. Thomas P. McCarthy The Mass of the Resurrection for Viatorian priest, Rev. Thomas P. McCarthy, C.S.V., will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, at St. James Church, 820 N. Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights. Interment will be in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, Hillside. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until the time of a wake service at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, at Little Sisters of the Poor St. Joseph's Home, 80 W. Northwest Highway, Palatine. Born May 12, 1920, in Boston, Mass., he died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2007, at Little Sisters of the Poor St. Joseph's Home for the Elderly in Palatine. Fr. McCarthy professed his first vows as a member of the Clerics of St. Viator on August 19, 1947. He was ordained a priest in Washington, D.C. on Oct. 1, 1952. After ordination he was assigned to teach at Alleman High School in Rock Island, Ill.; Spalding Institute in Peoria and Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada. He was pastor at Our Lady of Wisdom Church in Reno, Nevada, and served as associate pastor in several parishes including Holy Cross Church in Morgan City, La.; St. Viator Church in Chicago; Immaculate Conception Church in Marlborough, Mass. and Saints Peter and Paul Church in Boston, Mass.. He moved to the Province Center in Arlington Heights in 1992 to become the superior of the Viatorian retirement community. After he retired, he assisted at local parishes, played his violin at area nursing homes and senior centers and wrote his book, Forever A Priest. He also served as chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Holy Rosary Council #4483 and assisted with the Marriage Encounter Organization. He is survived by six brothers and one sister, James, Francis, Charles, Paul, Richard, Vincent and Mrs. Theresa Baufford. He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Rose (nee McKernan) McCarthy; and his brother, Alfred. Arrangements were made by Oehler Funeral Home, Arlington Heights Chapel, 847-253-5423.
