If Joseph Vineyard McCarter was born in 1821, and his father William McCarter was born ca.1769/1770 that would be about a 51-year-difference. Ca.1769/1770 is the earliest date allowed for William McCarter because he has been listed in the age group 50/60 by the census taker for the 1830 census. You can even calculate 1770 - 1780.
