Hi!

Joseph Vinyard McCarter's parents were William McCarter (Born:1769/1770 ca.) and second wife (?) Sallie Brimmer who were married on 10/10/1812 in Jefferson County, TN. Bondsman for the marriage was Joseph Birchfiel/
Birchfield.

William's (Born: 1769/1770 ca.) father was William McCarter who was born 10/2/1756 probably in Lancaster County, PA. William's (Born: 1756) father was Moses McCarter, Sr. of Abbeville County, SC. The (first) wives of both Williams (father and son) are not known.

Sallie Brimer's parents were Jesse Brimer and Eleanor RENEAU. Regarding the family name RENEAU, I have recently posted on this genforum an early marriage on a RENO (RENEAU) that took place in Knox County, TN during the early 1800s.

Sometime after the 1812 marriage, Joseph Vinyard McCarter's father William McCarter (Born: 1769/1770 ca.) was residing in Rhea County, TN. He is found listed in 1819 Taxpayers List for Rhea County in Capt. William McCray's Company. He is found listed in the 1825 Taxpayers List for Rhea County in Capt. Swann's Company. He is found listed in the 1827 Taxpayers List for Capt. Rowden's Company.

He is found listed in the 1830 Tennessee Census of Rhea County and is listed in the age group 50/60. This would place his birth as early as 1769/1770.

In 1837, William McCarter (Born:1769/1770 ca.) may have spent sometime in jail for one reason or another. On 12/4/1837 the court in Rhea County paid John Hampton, jailor, $7.37 1/2 for keeping two men in jail named William McCarter and Isaac MORRIS.

I have always been curious who this Isaac MORRIS was, because in the estate papers of William Ogle (Died: 1803) in Edgefield County, SC - mentioned a few times is Wyett (Wyatt) MORRIS. William Ogle's daughter Rebecca Ogle married James McCarter, son of William McCarter (Born: 10/2/1756). This is my ancestry.

Also in the early Taxpayers Lists for Rowan County, NC in the 1770s you find listings for William Ogle and Wyatt MORRIS.

It appears that prior to 1832, William McCarter (Born: 1769/1770 ca.) was residing in the Whites Creek area of Rhea County, TN. The Whites Creek area is not far from the old town of Evansville/Evensville of Rhea County, TN. Most of the old town is now a four-lane highway with a portion of the Old Evensville Rd. running a short distance from end to end. The majority of the Whites Creek area is also a four-lane highway.

Located in the old town of Evensville was the Collins Rd. and located on the road was the Collins Tannery. Your Joseph Vinyard McCarter put on credit $1.25 of leather at the Tannery on 2/5/1848.

As far as I know, William McCarter (Born: 1769/1770 ca.) and wife Sallie Brimer had a total of eight children.

The two youngest sons Abel McCarter and Moses McCarter were still living by 1900.

Abel McCarter is found listed as Abe McCarter in the 1900 Texas Census of Fannin County. He is listed as age 72 and is on his second or third marriage. He and his wife Ellen have been married for 14 years. It is listed that she has had six children with four children still living. The eldest son is age 18, and may be a child from Abel's previous marriage. The remaining children are ages: 13,10,7 and 5.

It is listed that Abe (Abel) was born in Tennessee. His father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in North Carolina.

Moses McCarter is found listed in the 1900 Texas Census of Grayson County. He is listed as age 80 and residing in the household of his nephew Pink J. McCarter. It is listed that Moses was born in Tennessee. His father was born in South Carolina and his mother was born in North Carolina.

It appears that William McCarter (Born: 1769/1770 ca.) was deceased by 1840 since he is no longer found listed in the census records or any record in Rhea County, TN.

I notice you did not post your e-mail address. A lot of people have info on this family. I hope these tidbits help.

Thank you,
Anna Walker
