My daughter volunteered my services as an amateur genealogist to her best friend as a wedding present. This is one line of McCanns. I thought I'd share it. Note: 1) I'm probably relying too heavily on undocumented web sites, Roots Web World Connect in particular. 2) y genealogy program mushes names and source citations together, so "John Smith1,2,3" should really be "John Smith 1,2,3". 3) When I copy a census entry, I use it as Ancestry.com has it indexed, not as it should be; so "McCann" is "McCan", "McConn" or "Mc Cann" (with a space). 4) Again, I'm not related. Just enjoy the sport. Corrections welcomed, of course. -------------------------------------------- First Generation 1. Hamilton McCann 1-5 was born in 1828/29 in Kentucky. He appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He died on 22 Jan 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. In 1850 Hamilton and family are in Jefferson County, Illinois: Hamilton McCan, 21, laborer, Tenn Nancy "", 19, Tenn Sarah A. "", 2, Ill Elizabeth "", 3/12ths In 1860 Hamilton and family are in Jefferson County, Illinois: Hamilton Mc Cann, 32, farmer, Tenn Nancy M Mc Cann, 27, Ill Elizabeth Mc Cann, 8, Ill Mary J Mc Cann, 6, Ill Aaron D Mc Cann, 5, Ill Stephen Aaron Douglas uses "Stephen", "Douglas" and "S. A. D.". This is the only time I've seen "Aaron". Sarah is missing. She would have been 12, so it is unlikely she is married; she probably died young. Hamilton McCann and Nancy Malinda Stringer were married on 11 Jan 1848 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Nancy Malinda Stringer 1,2,4-6 was born in 1830/31 in Tennessee. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. In 1870 a newly widowed Nancy is in Jefferson County, PO Spring Garden: Nancy McCann, 39, Ill, farmer Mary McCann, 18, at home, Ill Douglas McCann, 15, Ill, farm laborer James McCann, 20, Ill, farm laborer Francis Stringer, (female), 13, Ill, at home Henry Stevens, 7, Ill James McCaslin, 54, Indiana, Grocer The fact James, 20, is out of age order hints strongly that he is a nephew or cousin, not a son. He isn't on the 1860. Hamilton McCann and Nancy Malinda Stringer had the following children: 2 i. Sarah A McCann 1,4 was born in 1848 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Illinois. +3 ii. Elizabeth McCann, born in 1850, Jefferson County, Illinois; married John Quincy Adams, on 19 Mar 1868, Jefferson County, Illinois. 4 iii. Mary J McCann 1,5,6 was born in 1851/52 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. There is a marriage record and an 1880 census entry that strongly suggests Mary J married a Charles Bliss. If he is a son, he is from Charley's first wife, and Charley was married (or trifling with the neighbor) at 17.) +5 iv. Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann, born on 12 Apr 1855, Illinois; married Morning Orlena Ham, on 15 Mar 1879, Jefferson County, Illinois; married Martha Euphema Martin, on 29 Oct 1892, Clark County, Washington (prob); married Josephine Reeder, between 1910 and 1920; died on 24 Feb 1927, Clark County, Washington (prob). Second Generation 3. Elizabeth McCann 1,4,5,7-9 (Hamilton-1) was born in 1850 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1850 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Jefferson County, Illinois. In 1870 a newly married Elizabeth is in Jefferson County: John Adams, 26 Elizabeth Adams, 20 James Adams, 1/12 Daniel Baltzell, 12 In 1880 Elizabeth is in Pendleton, Jefferson, Illinois with her husband and brother: John Adams, Self, M, Male, W, 37, Il, Farmer, Sc, Tn Elizebeth Adams, Wife, M, Female, W, 26, Il, Keeping House, Ky, Tn James E. Adams, Son, S, Male, W, 10, Il, Il, Il Stephen McCan, Bro-L, W, Male, W, 24, Il, Farmer, Ky, Tn (Elizabeth was 3/12ths on the 1850, 8 in 1860, 20 in 1870, so she shaved 4 years off her age here for some reason.) Elizabeth McCann and John Quincy Adams were married on 19 Mar 1868 in Jefferson County, Illinois. John Quincy Adams 7-9 was born in 1842/43 in Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Jefferson County, Illinois. 5. Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann 1,5-7,10-15 (Hamilton-1) was born on 12 Apr 1855 in Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1880 in Pendleton, Jefferson, Illinois. He appeared in the census in 1885 in Clark County, Washington. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. He died on 24 Feb 1927 in Clark County, Washington (prob). He was buried in Park Hill Cem, Vancouver, Clark, Washington. Stephen A. Douglas McCann used Stephen, Douglas and "S. A. D." as his whimsy dictated. The Lincoln-Douglas debates were in 1858, but Stephen A Douglas was a senator, and well-respected (by Republicans) in Illinois before then. His birthplace matches his daughter Mary Elizabeth's 1920 and 1930 census entries. In 1880 he got recorded as widowed, although he was separated. He is living with his sister and her husband in Pendleton, Jefferson, Illinois: (Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace) John Adams, Self, M, Male, W, 37, Il, Farmer, Sc, Tn Elizebeth Adams, Wife, M, Female, W, 26, Il, Keeping House, Ky, Tn James E. Adams, Son, S, Male, W, 10, Il, Il, Il Stephen McCan, Bro-L, W, Male, W, 24, Il, Farmer, Ky, Tn Note the "Ky, Tn" birthplaces on Elizabeth and Stephen. That strongly hints he is Elizabeth's brother, not the John's sister's husband. (See Wife #1, Morning Orlena Ham, for her census entry.) Stephen apperas on the 1885 Territorial census in Clark County, Washington. He is single, 27 years old and born in Illinois. The image is too faint to read. In 1900 the family is in Whipple Creek, Clark, Washington, indexed as "Mc Cann", with a space: Stephen A Mc Cann, 44, head, Apr 1856, Ill, Ill, Ill, Farmer Martha E Mc Cann, 26, Wife. Apr 1874, Oregon, Ill, Iowa Ada D Mc Cann, 6, Dau, Apr 1893, Ore, Ill, Ore Mary E Mc Cann, 5, Dau, May 1895, Wash, Ill, Ore Anna L Mc Cann, 2, Dau, Aug 1897, Wash, Ill, Ore Lenora M Mc Cann, 5/12, Dau, Jan 1900, Wash, Ill, Ore They have been married for 7 years. In 1910 he is still in Whipple Creek, Clark, Washington, although indexed as "McCome"and he is shading the truth about being widowed. Martha is in Los Gatos, California, with the kids. She says she is divorced. Back in Washington, Stephen's parents' birthplaces don't jibe. Someone other than Stephen may have given the enumerator the data. Stephen A D McCome, head, 52, widowed Ill, Tenn, Tenn, Farmer In 1920 he is still in Whipple Creek, Clark, Washington, remarried: Duglas S A McCann, 61, head Josephine McCann, 58, wife, Ore, Ind, Ohio Robert McCann, 14, son, Ore, Ill, Ore Robert is a problem. I looked for a widow or married lady named Josephine with a 4-year old son Robert in the 1910 and didn't find one. Stephen is all by himself in 1910. Martha Martin has a 3-year old son with her in Los Gatos in 1910. Robert could be a step-son mis-identified as a son in 1920. He could be the reason Martha is divorced and two states south of Stephen in 1910. The Clark County Genealogy Sociecty has transcribed thousands of cemetery records and put them on-line. This is from the Park Hill Cemetery in Vancouver, Clark Co., Washington: Plot B 90-2 McCann, Josephine (Reeder), 1861 - 1935 b. Indiana, d. 22 Mar 1935 aged 73 years, 11 months, interred 24 Mar 1935; lot owner, self, funeral home Knapp Plot B 90-3 McCann, Stephan A. Douglas, 1855 - 1927. (IOOF emblem) B. Ill; d, 23 Feb 1927 aged 71 yrs, 10 months; interred 27 Feb 1927. Lot owner Joseph McCann. Shared stone with Josephine Reeder McCann. Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann and Morning Orlena Ham were married on 15 Mar 1879 in Jefferson County, Illinois. They were divorced in 1885 in Jefferson County, Illinois. Morning Orlena Ham16-22 was born in May 1854 in Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1860 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1870 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Jefferson County, Illinois. She was buried in Opdyke / Jones Cem, Jefferson County, Illinois. Morning Orlena Ham married Stephen A. Douglas McCann, but the marriage dissolved. She evidently never remarried. Her tombstone reads "Orlena Ham McCann" In 1860 she is "Orlina" in Jefferson County, Illinois: John Ham, 49 Letney A Ham, 33 George W Ham, 19 Eliza Ham, 16 James M Ham, 14 John W Ham, 11 Joel H Ham, 9 Orlena Ham, 7 Margaret Ham, 4 Voflerria Ham, 2 Wesley M Ham, 3.12 Avarilla Ham, 53 In 1870, she is "Morance" in Jefferson County, Illinois: Liba H Ham, 42 Jobe Ham, 19 (Joel Harvey) Morance Ham, 17 Voulina Ham, 12 Wesley Ham, 10 John Ham, 5 Ava Ham, 62 Steven Harris, 24 In 1880, after the brief marriage, she is back with her family in Dodds Twp, Jefferson, Illinois: (Name, Relation, Marital Status, Gender, Race, Age, Birthplace, Occupation Father's Birthplace, Mother's Birthplace) S. Ham, Son, S, Male, W, 15, IL, Work On Farm, Ky, Mo In 1900 she is with her brother in Jefferson County: Wesley M Ham, 40, head Dicey Cruel, 62, aunt Aplena Ham, 46, sister Logan Dunivian, 10, cousin Victor U Ham, 21, cousin Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann and Martha Euphema Martin were married on 29 Oct 1892 in Clark County, Washington (prob). Martha Euphema Martin 10,11,23-25 (daughter of William Bartholomew Martin and Mercy Matilda Heckard ) was born on 26 Apr 1874 in Marion County, Oregon. She appeared in the census in 1880 in Mehama Twp, Marion, Oregon. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. She died on 24 Jul 1962 in St. Helena, Napa, California. She was also known as Ephemia. Daughter Mary Elizabeth's 1920 and 1930 census entries both have Illinois and Oregon for mother and father's birth places. Martha's tree is hugely speculative. The RWWC entry may be wrong. The Alcorn family notes may be mistakes. Take Martha's parents as a theory, not a fact. Since parents William and Mercy were in Marion County for the 1870 and 1880, I'm guessing Martha (1874) and her brother Paul (1877/78) were born there. In 1910 Martha is in Los Gatos (Redwood Twp), Santa Clara, California. She is divorced with six kids, making ends meet by working in people's homes. Ada is helping. Her age is off by 6, her name is missing but the kids' names and ages match exactly. From the fact all the kids were marked sown as being born in Oregon (Mary Elizabeth and all of her younger siblings were born in Washington) and the fact the parents are born in "USA", we can assume someone besides Martha gave the data to the enumerator; maybe a neighbor, maybe Ada, who really was born in Oregon. Mrs McCann, 40, head, divorced, USA, unknown, unknown, houseworker, private families Ada McCann, 17, dau, Oregon, USA, USA, house servant, private families Mary McCann, 15, dau, Oregon, USA, USA Laura McCann, 13, dau, Oregon, USA, USA Lenora McCann, 10, dau, Oregon, USA, USA Paul McCann, 8, son, Oregon, USA, USA Joseph McCann, 3, son, Oregon, USA, USA The columns "children borne, children still alive" are blank for Martha, 6 each for Ada, who is 17. Yet another clue that this family wasn't the enumerator's finest hour. Assuming the numbers should have gone in Martha's row, they prove all the kids are hers. Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann and Martha Euphema Martin had the following children: 6 i. Ada D. McCann 11,25 was born in Apr 1893 in Oregon. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. +7 ii. Mary Elizabeth McCann . 8 iii. Anna L. McCann 11,25 was born in Aug 1897 in Washington State. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. 9 iv. Lenora McCann 11,25-28 was born in Jan 1900 in Washington State. She appeared in the census in 1900 in Whipple Creek Precinct, Clark, Washington. She appeared in the census in 1910 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. She died on 20 Jan 1989 in San Bernadino County, California. Lenora's birth year is 1901 on the CDI, 1900 on the SSDI. Her death place is San Bernardino County on the CDI. Her LR is Newbury Park, Ventura, California on the SSDI. Both places could be true. In 1920 Lenore is working as a nurse in the St. Helena Sanatorium, She is 19, single, with birthplaces Washington, Washington, Oregon. 10 v. Hamilton Paul McCann 25,27,29 was born on 24 Jan 1903 in Clark County, Washington. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Los Gatos, Santa Clara, California. He died on 18 Aug 1987 in Redding, Shasta, California. His SSDI Last Residence is Redding; he may have died elsewhere. CDI says Shasta County. Since Stephen A. Douglas is in Clark County in 1900 and 1910, I'm assuming that's where Paul was born. 11 vi. Joseph McCann was born. Stephen Aaron Douglas McCann and Josephine Reeder were married between 1910 and 1920. Josephine Reeder 14,15 was born in Apr 1861 in Indiana. She died on 22 Mar 1935 in Clark County, Washington (prob). She was buried in Park Hill Cem, Vancouver, Clark, Washington. Ill; d, 23 Feb 1927 aged 71 yrs, 10 months; interred 27 Feb 1927. Lot owner Joseph McCann. Shared stone with Josephine Reeder McCann. Third Generation 7. Mary Elizabeth McCann (Stephen Aaron Douglas-2, Hamilton-1) married Willard Emery. Willard Emery 30-34 (son of John Emery and Anna Arnison ) was born on 25 Jul 1886 in South Dakota. He appeared in the census in 1900 in Maricopa County, Arizona. He appeared in the census in 1910 in Chico, Butte, California. He appeared in the census in 1920 in Brawley, Imperial, California. He appeared in the census in 1930 in Modesto, Stanislaus, California. He died on 1 Dec 1971 in San Joaquin County, California. I estimated Willard and Mary's marriage date as 1910 - 1911 because Willard is single in 1910, and their first child was born in November of 1912. I assumed they were married a year or so before he came along. ========== In 1920 the family is in Brawley, Imperial, California: (Name, age, relation to head of household, birthplace, father's BP, mother's BP) Willard Emery, 32, head, SD, SD, SD Mary Emery, 24, wife, Wash, Ill, Ore Wilson Emery, 7, Cal, SD, Wash Douglas Emery, 5, Cal, SD, Wash Genva Emery, 7/12, Cal, SD, Wash Willard is a laborer in a fruit shed. ========== In 1930 the family is in Modesto, Stanislaus, California: (Name, relation to head of household, age, birthplace, father's BP, mother's BP) Willard Emery, 44, head, SD, USA, Norway Mary Emery, 35, wife, Wash, Ill, Ore Wilson Emery, 17, son, Cal, SD, Wash Doughlas Emery, 15, son, Cal, SD, Wash Geneva Emery, 10, dau, Cal, SD, Wash Anna Emery, 7, dau, Cal, SD, Wash Willard is renting for $30 a month. He is a mailer or nailer for a fruit yard. Wilson is a mechanic in a fruit yard. Willard was 24 at first marriage, Mary 15, 16 or 18 maybe; the last digit is blurred. Mary Elizabeth McCann and Willard Emery had the following children: +12 i. Wilson Emery, born on 3 Nov 1912, Fresno County, California; died on 4 Jan 2003, Modesto, Stanislaus, California. 13 ii. D Emery. 14 iii. Mabel M. Emery 35 was born on 2 Aug 1916 in Tulare County, California. She died before 1920 in California. Mabel M. is on the California Birth Index with MMN McCann, b. 2 Aug 1916 in Tulare County. She isn't on the 1920 or 1930 census. It might be a typo - the CBI entry could be for Douglas. She may have died young. There could be another Emery + McCann couple in California. I'm assuming she died young, though. 15 iv. G Emery. 16 v. M A Emery. Sources (Selected URLs below footnotes) 1.
