My husband's family of McCanns comes from Camlough, Co Armagh, outside Newry. There are other McCanns in that area but his grandfather, John, was an only child. However we know that his great grandfather was Michael and as Michael lived in a house known even now as 'Atty's', we think that this is a dimutive of Arthur or possibly Matthew. there is also a grave in Killeavy churchyard (the oldest church in Ireland? with the name McCann but we don't know if this is connected even though it is only 1 mile from Atty's. Good luck. Anne McCann
