we have read the mc candless book. and cannot find reference to the parentage of joshua brown, who married sarah mc candless. the church records of that period are not available. possibly a/k/aSarrah
[S224] Will of Pvt. Robert McCandless (ca1745-1813) of Butler Co., PA (#A-034 in Butler Co. willbook)
One of the William Johnstons served as executor of this will.
The following is a verbatim copy of his will (from McCandless 1989):
"The last will and testament of Robert McCandless. I, Robert
McCandless of Middlesex Township and County of Butler being in a low
state of health and being assured that I at some period must depart
this life and being by the providence of God in my proper senses and
sound memory do bequeath all my wordly estate unto those of my heirs
that I will name as follows, viz first to my wife Sarrah McCandless
the one third of all my personal property which property must be
appraised and she must take [???] the appraisment. Second to my
daughter Martha and Sarrah Brown and Jean Day and Elizabeth Gilleland
and Margaret Johnson and Bakel Kilgore and Mary Johnston and daughter
and Robert McCandless and John McCandless and James McCandless my
sons must each have an equal share of my estate that remains after my
wife's third is taken out. Thirdly I allow all my estate real and
personal to be appraised and my son Robert McCandless may keep that
hundred acres of land that he lives on at the appraisment by paying
the other heirs the balance that may be over his equal divide of
estate only he must have seven years to pay the said overplus.
Fourthly I allow the plantation that I now live on to be rented seven
years and the rent to be given to my wife Sarrah and my daughter
Martha for their maintenance over and above their other I have
described among my children. Fifthly after my wife Sarrah takes her
third at the appraisment the remainder of the personal property must
be sold and all debts due me recorded and all that is due to any
person by me paid and then the whole of my personal property to be
divided as directed above only Martha is not to receive her part till
at full age of maturity and if she should die before that time her
part to descend among the rest of my children. Sixthly I appoint
William Johnston Esqr of Cranberry Township and William Johnston of
Middlesex Township to execute this my last will and testament in
witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this nineteenth
day of April 1813."
On the 18th day of January, A.D. 1819, on petition of Sarah Brown, praying the court to appoint guardian for the minor children of Joshua Brown, dec'd, to-wit:Mary, Robert, John, Sammuel and Caleb Brown, prayer granted and the court appointed Hugh Gilleland guardian to take care of the persons and estates of said minors.By the Court.
Similarly, we found
At an orphan court held at Butler, Sarah Brown, a minor above the age of 14 years came into the court and by petition prayed the court to permit her to make choice of guardian, prayer granted and Hugh Gilleland was by her choice guardian during her minority, which choice was approved by the Court.January 1822.
The first above was the only guardianship for a Caleb Brown in Butler County, but it fit:The date was a few years after the War of 1812.(Perhaps Joshua died in the war, or died later from wounds received in the war; or perhaps there was no need for the guardianship until 1819.)The Children appeared to be named in order of age, since the girls and boys were mixed, making Caleb (born in 1814) the baby and him having an older brother, John.Plus, Caleb had a son named Robert, John had a daughter named Mary, they both had a John, John had a Samuel, and John had a Sarah.Perhaps this was the family.
So we went looking in Butler County for information on Joshua.
Butler County information on Joshua Brown.
As we are writing this we come across this early entry in Butler County (before we had been to the courthouse):
Will Book A, Page 109
Caleb Brown of Middlesex Twp., Butler Co. Pa.Dated 7 Oct 1823 Field 15 Dec 1823.Son:Abraham and Joshua Brown; Daughter:Lydia, Rachel, Mary Brown Young; G-Children:Robert Brown, son of Joshua; Lewis and Lydia Young, children of Mary Young.Exers.Robert Brown and Robert Grahma, son-in-lawWit:Adam Brown and Caleb Brown???:Dolent Scott.
There also appears to be a deed from Caleb Brown, et ux. In 12/17/1833, at Deed Book I page 103, but for some reason we thought it irrelevant at the time.
We have requested a copy of the will.Perhaps we should also request a copy of the deed, as it may be some time before we return to Butler County.
