Can you tell me the name of the woman who applied for the widow's pension where T.H.B. McCandless was witness? I want to order a copy.
I am researching this McCandless for my cousin's wife. At this point, I believe that the William McCandless you are speaking of was the brother of T. H. B. McCandless rather than his father. William was William Lafayette McCandless b. 15 Dec 1838, AL d. 4 Nov 1917, Farmersville, Collin, TX.
I believe that William Lafayette McCandless' 1st wife was Mary Smith Wheeler, daughter of Joel Wheeler and Ruth McCandless. She m. 1st Marshal Augustus Berry 6 Sep 1860 in Polk Co, GA. She m. 2nd William Lafayette McCandless 29 Dec 1867 in Polk Co, GA. Mary Smith Wheeler was b. 18 Jul 1839 in GA and d. 9 May 1895. She is buried at Farmersville, Collin, TX.
William Lafayette McCandles enlisted twice during the Civil War. Once in TN and again in GA. This according to his TX Confederate Pension Application.
William L. McCandless m. 2nd Eliza E/A Unknown 20 Dec 1896 in Collin Co, TX. She states in her widow's pension application that she was b. Polk Co, GA. She died in Tarrant Co, TX in 1924.
I believe at this point that T. (Thomas) H. B. McCandless and William Lafayette McCandless were the sons of James K. McCandless and Elizabeth Unknown. I found this couple in 1850 in Cherokee Co, AL, but fail to find them after that. James K. states that he is 36 yrs old and was b. TN.
Elizabeth states that she is 34 and b. VA. There are 7 children listed in the household.
I do have other census data that leads me to believe the two men were brothers. Also have some info from cousin that could be shared.
If I am wrong about my research, please let me know. Best to all.
