we were in butler co., pa. library and courthouse..searching for caleb brown my ggg grandfather who was born there..we found documents leading us to believe that he was the son of joshua brown who married sarah/sarrah mc candless in 1802..thus searching for more information on the mc candless line..

Here, we found a Pvt. Robert McCandless, born in Ireland in 1745, and a Revolutionary War Veteran, who settled in Butler County, Pennsylvania, most particularly in Middlesex Township and the adjoining, Connoquenessing Township. His daughter, Sarah McCandless, is reported there to have married Joseph/Joshua Brown in 1802 in Middlesex Township of Butler County, PA. She is reported to have been born in ABT 1782, Franklin_Co.\Antrim_Tshp., Cumberland_Co., PA, US. Her name is spelled Sarah/Sarrah.

This finding was intriguing, but it gets much more interesting.

Robert McCandless’s oldest daughter, Elizabeth, is reported to be the wife of Hugh Gilleland (undoubtedly the person chosen as the Guardian of Caleb and his siblings!!!).

Interestingly, two of Robert McCandless’s girls married men named “William Johnston.” Is this the beginning of a connection into Caleb’s wife, Elizabeth Johnston?
