George McKemey Mecklenburg Co, NC
In 1766, One George McKemey bought land in Mecklenburg Co, NC on
the north side of Waxhaw Creek. This was very near the old road which
then divided NC and SC. He married Margaret Hutchinson, one of
several sisters who resided in that vicinity. One of Margaret's sisters
was named Elizabeth. Elizabeth married one Andrew Jackson. They had
a son named Andrew. So, yes, George McKemey was uncle by marriage
to President "Andy" Jackson.
The party carrying the body of the deceased Andrew Jackson Senior to
burial in 1767 stopped at the McKemey cabin.
Much later this became fell into Union Co, NC, created from Mecklenburg Co, NC.
In fact, confusion arose in later years as to exactly where Andrew
Jackson was born. He was born shortly after his father's death and
burial. No one knew he was going to become famous, so no one had
really given it much thought. Some of the older folk thought he might
have been born in George McKemey's cabin on the NC side of the line.
Others believed the widow Jackson had got as far the home of another
sister, Jane, in SC, who had married a Crawford.
George McKemey died 10 October 1793 at the age of 79, thus born ca
1714. Margaret (Hutchinson) McKemey was born ca 1730 and died 30
April 1790. Both are buried at the old graveyard attached to the
Waxhaw Presbyterian Church in Lancaster Co, SC.
I don't know much else about these McKemeys except that there was a
George junior.
