McCamey migration to Texas (1850-1900)

If anyone has any information or insight to what may have attracted settlers to Texas prior and after 1850, I would like to hear from you! I have found a John Nulen McCamey listed in the 1880 census index for Gonzales county Texas. I am looking from where this individual or his father migrated from (My hunch is Virginia). He may have also used any of the various spellings of the name.

Does anyone have a complete listing of the variations of the name McCamey?

Happy searching!
