Hi Folks, I've done several charts of McCallums round Loch Tay & have some theories on Duncan's descent. He was b. 7/6/1800 at Stronfearnan, Kenmore (north side of loch) to Finlay McCallum & Christian Campbell. He had brothers Finlay (also to Canada), James, John, Archibald. Their eldest son was named John, which fits with the only likely baptism of Finlay, 24/8/1764 Blairliaragan, Kenmore (also north of loch, not far from Stronfearnan), as he was only son of a John McCallum & Christian McMartin, most of whose kids were bapt at Killin. There were very few Finlay McCallums, but lots of Johns; there was a John b. 1728 Killin to Finlay McC & Janet McDiarmid, which again fits with normal naming patterns. This John's twin brother Duncan b. 1728 also had sons Finlay (eldest), Malcolm, Donald, Hugh & Duncan (who also married a McDiarmid & lived close to family that spawned George McCallum, who was one of the North Easthope pioneers). No proof, but patronymics fit each successive generation. As well as crofting, many of the Kenmore/Killin McCs were heavily into illicit whisky distilling (inc. George) & cattle dealing/droving, later legitimately. One branch founded "McCallum's Perfection" blended Scotch, which is still being sold.......... Hope this helps, Rob Notify Administrator about this message?
