After a long hiatus, I have recently returned to poking at the WVA McCallisters again. They are a frustrating bunch and not very creative in naming their children. There must have been a whole passle of cousins of roughly the same age in each generation named James. How confusing! There also is a lot of mistaken "information" posted online about this family. This makes the search even more difficult.
I am currently trying to make sense of James, the son of James and Mary <McGloughlin> McCallister. I know that his commonly listed date and place of death are wrong. "Our" James died after the 1810 census in [W]VA, probably in Bath Co. The fellow who died 1797 in North Carolina was a different James McCallister from Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia. He has been confused with ours because he had a brother named "John," but his brother moved from Frederick Co., Virginia to Tennessee.
Because so many people wrongly believe that "our" James died in 1797 in North Carolina, his Bath Co. children are either attached to the wrong families, or aren't attached at all.
At this point, I suspect that "our" James McCallister's commonly listed birth year is also incorrect. I have always seen "abt. 1760" but there is no documentation for that date. I also do not have a documented marriage date. If James was born closer to 1750 and married around 1775, he could have been the father of, among others:
1. John McCallister (b. abt 1775), who married Mary Kincaid June 16, 1800 in Bath Co. Virginia. John was on the 1810 Bath Co. census living near his mother-in-law, Ann Kincaid, his likely father James McCallister, and his likely uncle Thomas McCallister.
2. James McCallister b. abt. 1776. I believe he was on the 1850 census with his widowed sister-in-law Elizabeth Grass McCallister.
3. Joseph McCallister(b. abt. 1780) who married 2nd to Elizabeth Grass on October 3, 1811, Bath Co Virginia.
4. Nancy McCallister who married Martin Buzzard Sr 7 September 1810 in Bath Co., Virginia
5. Mary McCallister who married married Benjamin Johnson October 22, 1814, Bath Co., Virginia.
6. Hannah McCallister who married Thomas Wyatt 12 September 1811, Bath Co., Virginia.
