Mary, wife of James McCaleb Sr. of Hickman Co., Tennessee
We know from a variety of records that James McCaleb's wife was named Mary. Many family trees list her as "Mary Harrington," apparently because they had a son named Zill Harrington McCaleb, but I have never been able to document Mary's maiden name and various Harrington researchers are doubtful that she actually was a Harrington.
James McCaleb Sr. was a baptist preacher and mill owner in Rockingham Co., North Carolina, in the 1790's.He was on the 1790 census living a few houses away from John Hallum.According to John Hallum's 1822, Smith Co., Tennessee, will, his daughter Mary was married to James McCaleb.
James McCaleb (of Hickman) was pastor of the Round Lick Baptist Church in Smith Co., Tennessee, in 1807-1808, about the time John Hallum moved to Smith Co.James subsequently moved on to Hickman Co. abt. 1809 and established a church and a mill there.
I had originally discounted the possibility that James McCaleb Sr. of Hickman was married to Mary Hallum because there seemed to be a James McCaleb on the 1840 census in Smith Co.; however, I recently discovered that he probably was the James H/W MCCABE who was on the 1820, 1830 and 1850 censuses in Smith Co., but was missing from the 1840 census.
Does anyone have documentation that James McCaleb's wife actually was Mary Harrington?Does anyone have documentation that Mary Hallum married a different James McCaleb?
