This is the lineage of Monroe McCaleb, born in 1919. Part of the Berry line was gotten from a web page, that since I have lost the url. I have tried to confirm that information as best I could. I have some pdf's of the census and other information that I have researched. I have several gaps in the information. Please help me complete this limb of my tree. Coming soon, Beatrice Mccaleb's line, which were Pratt 's and Brogan 's. Joda Lee McCaleb was Monroe's Father. His parents were Thomas N. McCaleb and Ella E. McCaleb-Berry. He was also called Joseph L. McCaleb in the first census he was recorded in of 1900, but it was changed in the 1910 census on. Note that it is determined to be the same person because the mom and dad and the age remained the same. He was born on Jan. 16, 1895. His social security number was 568-18-6649. He denied the draft registration on Jan. 5, 1917 at 22 years of age. He listed his occupation as "farmer for self". He described himself as tall, slender with light hair and blue eyes. Address in New Market, TN. The reason stated that he refused the draft was "dislocated ankle" He married Gertrude Bolin on July 14, 1918, at the age of 24 years. The form was filled in by hand and lists his name as "J.L. McCaleb" Also a note attached saying "July, 25, 1918 This marriage of Mr. J. L. McCaleb and Miss Gertrude Bolin is agreeable with us. Andy Bolin and Barby Bolin" I suspect that the note had to be written because Gertrude was only 14! Their official names were Barbara Bolin-(Yowberry*)* This has not been confirmed but it was written in a family tree by Beatrice McCaleb, Monroe's wife.)* Monroe was the first born of Joda and Gertrude McCaleb in 1919. Followed by Charles T. @1921 and James H. in 1923. The story is told by Gertrude that he went out to buy cigarettes and never came back. His whereabouts were unknown, but he did appear on the voter's registration of Los Angeles, CA from 1926 until 1954. His death certificate of the same location was dated March 2, 1959. Gertrude "Gertie" Bolin -McCaleb, Monroe's mom, was born November, 17, 1904. After Joda Lee McCaleb left, She would move in with Joseph P. Ballard according to the 1930 Census. He was 13 years older (52), already had 2 kids, Earl H (22) and John I (16) the eldest only 5 years younger than Gertie herself. They had a child together Ruth ( age 4) and another Allen (age 1 11/12) in 1929. Monroe McCaleb was 10 years old and listed as "step-son", Charles T McCaleb was 8, and James H. McCaleb was 6 years old. They were all living in District 15, Knoxville, TN. I could not find a marriage certificate for Gertie and Joseph Ballard, and if they did marry, she retained her McCaleb name. The records for Gertie and her family gets fuzzy from this point. There are several more marriages listed for a Gertrude McCaleb with the same birth date, some with differing social security numbers. I am going to describe Joda Lee McCaleb's Mother, Gertrude's Family next, as it is the shorter of the two. Gertrude Bolin-McCaleb's Father was Andrew "Andy" Bolin II, Born in August 1871. He had immigrated from Sweeden to MN, USA with his parents in 1885. He was the first of 4 sons and was named after his father. He was a farmer by trade. He married Barbara "Barby" or "Barbarby" Yowberry (This is not confirmed, but was written on the family tree by Monroe's wife Beatrice McCaleb ) who was from North Carolina. Their Children were: Bruce (1909) ; Irene (1915-twin); Kathleen (1915 -twin) ; Verna (1917) and Gertrude "Gertie" last in 1904. Andrew Bolin was Andy Bolins father and was born Aug, 1840 in Sweeden. He Married Mary Bolin-? who was born in April 1854, also from Sweeden. They immigrated to MN in 1885 with Andrew II (8/1871). Andrew Senior's occupation is stated as stone mason. They had Fred (8/1885); Victor (7/1889) and Willie (8/1893). Ok, Back to Joda Lee McCaleb's Father. He was Thomas N. McCaleb, born Jan. 1859. In different census' he has different jobs. Stable Boss, Coal Mines(1910). He married to Ella E.-Berry. One census states they had 4 children and only one living, which was Joda. Thomas N. McCaleb died July 19, 1918. That is the end of the trail I was able to find about Thomas, but his wife, Ella, is a very interesting story! Ella's Father, Hiram Berry was born 1821 and married (January 12, 1848) Sarah Cristie-Berry (born May 21, 1828, died June 20, 1888) whose parents were from Scotland. They had 5 children together: 1. Janet, born August 21, 1849; 2. Charles Hiram, June 7, 1852, died December 6, 1908; 3. William Edward, September 11, 1856; 4. Mary Ella, October 23, 1859; 5. George Christie, August 5, 1864, married, August 4, 1891, Ada Van Sickle, and had one child, 1. Hiram George, born May 11, 1898. Hiram Berry's Father was John Berry II. John Berry II was born in Mayfield, Fulton county, New York. He was reared to farm labor, and remained a farmer all his days. After his marriage, to Lucinda Stanton. he purchased a farm in Gloversville, New York, and there reared his family. He was in comfortable circumstances and held a good position in his town. John Berry II and Lucinda Stanton's Children were: 1. Rachel, married Alexander Scriminger. 2. John R. 3. Hiram, married, January 12, 1848, Sarah Christie, born May 21, 1828, died June 20, 1888 The John Berry (I) was born and married in Ireland. He came to the United States in 1793, and settled first in Albany, New York. He was accompanied by a brother Thomas and a sister Nancy. After a short time spent in Albany, John Berry removed to the town of Mayfield, Fulton county, New York, where he bought a farm and made his permanent home. He was a hardworking man, and became one of the prosperous farmers of Mayfield. He married, in Ireland, Nancy Mackett, who bore him ten children, all born in Mayfield. John, see forward; Thomas, Benjamin, James, Margaret, Rachel, Betsey, Mary Ann, Sarah and Agnes.
