Nancy, I actually fill out blank census forms and put down all the 0's when I transcribe census information. That way, I can make sure that I have not missed numbers or put numbers in the wrong boxes. This practice also makes it much easier to cross check information with another researcher. If the other researcher and I both fill in all the boxes, we can figure out discrepancies very easily. Unfortunately, when a researcher leaves off 0's, it is impossible for me to tell if the other researcher entered the numbers improperly or whether I was the one who screwed up. The 1820 census information you give about James McCaleb Jr. is a good example of the problem. You wrote: "1820*Census Records, Hickman Co., TN, pg. 187 James Mccaleb Jr. (0001-0101) head of household male, 26-44 yrs old, female 26-44 yrs old... female 10-15 yrs of age. " Obviously, my information was different. (0--0--0--1--0--0 1--0--1--0--0; head of household male 16-25, female under 5 and female 16-25.) Unfortunately, I could not tell from your numbers where the discrepancy came from. As it turns out, there were two problems. First, as you point out in your most recent post, category 4 for males on the 1820 census was for male heads of household aged 16-25, not males 26-44. (So you misread your own information.) In addition, you had the numbers for the females in the household in the wrong boxes. You had 0101 -- the census actually said, 1--0--1--0--0. (Baby Margaret born abt. 1819 and wife Sally age 16-25, born abt. 1801.) As I mentioned previously, the James McCaleb, Sr., line is collateral to the one I am researching. I appreciate the information you have given me. I am sure much of it is more accurate than I had before, but I don't want to spend additional time and effort going though the details on folks who aren't of pressing interest to me. I have other research I need to be doing. So, I leave the field to you. Janice P.S. James McCaleb Jr. and Sally Herrington were married before 1820, not after 1820. You should also double check your 1820 census information on James McCaleb, Sr. Notify Administrator about this message?
