Nancy,

Here are some additional comments, but if you want more you probably should contact me directly at the e-mail address. You get when you click on my name in the heading of this message:

1. John McCaleb, Jr., b. abt 1789. You list quite a few children for John McCaleb and his wives, but the only children I can document are: Sarah "Sally" McCaleb (my husband is descended from Sarah) and the sons listed on the 1850 census, Thomas, Hansel/Hassell, Newton, Henry, Franklin, and George. There is one internet site that lists a staggering number of children with vague dates and no information. However, that site also lists John McCaleb, Jr., as the son of James McCaleb Sr. and we know that is not accurate. So, given John's birth date, there may well have been other children, but I haven't seen documentation.

Sarah "Sally" McCaleb was born abt 1826 (1850 census age 24). She married James Ellison Adcock about 1844 and was living next door to John and Rachel McCaleb on the 1850 census in Hickman Co. James and Sarah Adcock moved to Texas about 1859. We do not know the name of Sarah's mother. Rachel Stiltz was 40 on the 1850 census, so it is possible that she actually was Sarah's mother -- if Rachel married at 15 and Sarah was her first child. So I am not even sure there were two wives. The only thing I can add is that Sarah did not name any of her children Rachel and the name has not come down in Sarah's descendents.

You have John's son Franklin Polk listed as having married 1st Dora Anderson, and 2nd Mary Bingham; however, Franklin was on the 1880 census with Dora. This means that Mary Bingham was the first wife. It also means that some of the children attributed to Mary are incorrect.

Franklin was on the 1860 Census in Hickman Co., TN District 15 with JS Anderson.

JONES, ORAN A 33 TN 261
JONES, MALINDA 30 TN 261
JONES, JOHN A 8 TN 261
JONES, M E 5 TN 261

Newton McCaleb was on the 1860 census with another related Anderson family:
1860 CENSUS
HICKMAN COUNTY TN DISTRICT 15
ANDERSON, WILLIAM 55 NC 260
ANDERSON, R A 46 TN 260
ANDERSON, E C 21 TN 260
ANDERSON, W S 19 TN 260
ANDERSON, SALINA D 16 TN 260
ANDERSON, ELIZABETH 14 TN 260
ANDERSON, TEMPA 11 TN 260
ANDERSON, ALICE 9 TN 260
ANDERSON, JAMES 5 TN 260
ANDERSON, CROSS F 2 TN 260
MCCALEB, N F 17 TN 260

You have Newton born abt. 1839, however, the 1860 census lists him as age 17 and the 1850 census transcription I have lists him as age 7 (not age 11). This would give him a birth year of 1843.

2. James McCaleb, Sr. b. abt 1777. James' estate was settled in 1848 -- presumably because his wife Mary had recently died. (Mary was a widow on the 1830 and 1840 censuses, but wasn't on the 1850 census.) The estate records listed two additional sons: Ephraim McCaleb and Caleb McCaleb. They were presumably alive in 1848 because son John, and daughters Mary Hassell and Elizabeth (Nancy) Harrington were listed as "deceased.

Records concerning estate settlement:
Hickman County, Tennessee Circuit Court Minute Book 1848-1851, Page 20 - James McCaleb, deceased, his heirs, ex parte, petition of the heirs and disentrustees of James McCaleb, Zebulon Hassell is guardian of Alton, James, Elizabeth, Zebulom and Joseph Hassell; William Harrington is guardian of John McCaleb. August 1848.

Hickman County, Tennessee Court Minutes, Page 189 - James McCaleb's heirs ex parte to divide slaves. Zill McCaleb, Ephraim McCaleb, Caleb McCaleb, and Hassell McCaleb are his sons, Elizabeth Harrington was daughter of Nancy McCaleb, deceased; Zebulon Hassell to get share as guardian of his children who were heirs of the deceased in the right of their mother, Mary, a daughter of James McCaleb, Alton McCaleb was son of James McCaleb Jr., James McCaleb was a son of James McCaleb Jr.

Deed Book B., O, 189, 12-18-1849-Divison of slaves and land among heirs of James McCaleb.

Minute Book 1844-55 p. 70-171
10-7-1850-Guardian's settlement by Wm. Harrington guardian for John McCaleb

James' daughter Elizabeth McCaleb Baird Tucker Harrington: Some internet sites say that Elizabeth died August 8, 1868 in Van Zandt County, Texas and was buried next to her husband Robert Harrington. Unfortunately, as shown by the estate documents, she was dead by August of 1848. However, I have confirmed with Harrington family researchers that the Elizabeth Harrington who was on the 1850 census in Hickman Co and the 1860 census in Van Zandt Co, Texas, actually was Robert's unmarried sister Elizabeth, not his wife. This fits with James Sr.'s estate information.

Elizabeth "Nancy" had one son, Albert M. Baird by her first marriage, two sons by the second marriage, Zill Tucker and Solomon Tucker, Jr., and a daughter Mary Elizabeth Harrington (b. 1845)with Robert Harrington. Mary Elizabeth is the Elizabeth Harrington listed as Nancy's daughter in the 1848 estate of James McCaleb, Sr.

Elizabeth and Robert Harrington entered into pre-nuptual contract before they married:
Marriage Contract between Robert Harrington and Elizabeth Tucker. Her property to her for life and then remainder to her sons, Zill and Soloman Tucker, and all she now possesses including land and cattle to the heirs of her body by Soloman Tucker. Witnesses: E. Walker, J. D. Easley. Made October 14, 1839, Recorded October 14, 1839. (Hickman County, Tennessee, Deed Book K, Page 190)

3. Elizabeth "Nancy" Ann McCaleb, b. abt 1781. Nancy is a nickname for Elizabeth, so there is nothing inconsistent about the various some sources listing her marriage to William Harrington under her nickname "Nancy" and others under her given name "Elizabeth." James McCaleb Sr.'s daughter Elizabeth who married Robert Harrington also went by the name "Nancy."
