I think your James McCaleb who married Susan might have come from Hickman Co., TN. His parents may have been Hansel(Hassel) and Louisa McCaleb, and his grandparents James McCaleb and Mary "Polly" Harrington. Hansel was listed as Hassel in his father's estate, but most records have been transcribed to read Hansel -- so you need to look at the handwritten documents to clear this up. In any event, Hansel was born about 1806. Hansel was in Scott Co. in 1860: 1860 SCOTT COUNTY ARKANSAS LIST OF HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS McCALIP, Hansel He was apparently dead by 1870 because his wife Louisa is on the census: 1870 SCOTT COUNTY ARKANSAS LIST OF HEADS OF HOUSEHOLDS McCALEB, James McCALEB, Louisa I have not verified this, but according to another McCaleb researcher,"Mrs. Louisa McCaleb homesteaded 40 acres in Section 35, Township 3 North, Range 32 West on 1 July 1875. This land is located in Lafayette Township of Scott County. She was listed in this record as the widow of Hansel McCaleb. Hansel and Louisa are listed as McCalip on the 1860 Scott County census in Tumlinson Township with four children. By 1870 Hansel had evidently died and Louisa is listed in Lafayette Township with two of her children. The 1880 Scott County census of Lafayette Township lists Louisa at age 68, a widow, living with her son Fernando McCaleb, age 27 and single. In the mid 1880s some of Louisa's children moved across the state line into the Choctaw Nation." I have more information about this family if you think it is the right one.
