There was a Hassell or Hassel McCaleb born about 1806, probably in Tennessee. His name is frequently mistranscribed from old records as Hansel or Hansell. His father was James McCaleb Sr. born abt 1767 NC. James died before 1830, Hickman Co., TN. His mother was Mary "Polly" Harrington who died about Aug 1848, Hickman Co., Tennessee.
Hansel/Hassell was on the 1830 CENSUS OF HICKMAN COUNTY TN as MCCALEB, HANSEL (page 260), but when his father/mother's estate was settled in August of 1848, he was listed as Hassell.
There was a large Hassell family in Hickman Co., and Hansel/Hassell's sister Mary was married to Zebulon HASSELL. Because cousins married frequently, there might have been a family connection between the Hassell family and the McCaleb family before the marriage.
