Hi, Noella! My brother and I were looking up our history and I spotted John McBurney...we stem from his brother Charles! John that married Ellen Kernighan (and then Margaret Kernighan)...their children were Margaret, Samuel, Eliza, John, Willie, and Joseph(we have all of their children listed...and who they married,etc...but that's a really long list! lol). It's been understood that the McBurney family fled Scotland at the time of the Clans defeat at Culodden in 1746. The name has been traced back to the Vikings and means "The Bear". Charles McBurney's wife (Elizabeth Skillen) always stressed to her family - "never forget you belong to the clan McIntosh"...not sure if it's the McBurney brothers that stem from that clan, but it is entirely possible. Apparently there were 5 McBurney brothers that came to Canada at the same time, but we only know of Charles and John. Do you happen to know of the others? The name, birthplace, and date of birth of your John caught my eye, I've read the history put together by my grandma (she did it when I was still a child...25 years ago or so!)...and those are the details we have! It's a small world! If you get a chance, send me a message and we can compare notes! lol Take care!
