I have recently found a James, Isabella "Bell" McBurney, ages 86 and 84 on the 1856 Iowa Census, Cedar County. Also listed is a William McBurney, age 40, who I presume is a relative (?son) and a Isabel Rankin who may be a granddaughter. I presume they (Jas. and Bell) are the two eldest McBurneys that traveled with the rest of their family to New York on April 12, 1839. Carol McBurney Bokas added a passenger list NY 1820-1846 dated 4/22/01 with the McBurney name spelt McBerney. I have identified alot of these McBerneys, so I am "pretty" sure they are my relatives. The children listed on the ship list, James, Rachel and Hugh settled in West Zorra, Oxford County, Ontario with their parents Hugh, 42 yrs and Rachel, 33 yrs. I have found Rachel's grave but not her husband's Hugh.
The others listed on the ship list, Wm., age 25 (maybe the Iowa Wm.), Rachel, 30 yrs., James 36 yrs., MaryAnn 11 yrs., Hopewell 22 yrs. remain a mystery. It is thought that Esther marrried a John Rankin (parents of the Isabell on the Iowa census?). Does any of this sound familiar to anyone?
