This is all very familiar, Robyn. My maternal great grandfather was Samuel McBurnie(the policeman who stayed in Kilmarnock), the brother of Elizabeth to whom you refer. I have already sent you an e mail with some further details & have additional information derived from Census extracts from 1841 to 1901 if you don't already have same.
