I am a McBean descendant and may be able t help.

The MacBeans of Tomatin (one of the main "heads" of the family - the others being the MacBeans of Kinchyle, Fallie, Drummond) in Inverness-shire set up a trading operation in Glasgow with interests in the West Indies. At the time of Culloden theirs was the only family without a head old enough to fight; the young son whose father had died some years before set up in business and thus managed to ensure that Tomatin was the only estate which remained in the family (until this century, when the estate was sold and the MacBeans moved to Rhodesia - now Zimbabwe). The family sent their papers to the archives in Inverness to avoid them being destroyed in the Bush War.

Many MacBeans went to the West Indies, along with others of Clan Chattan, some being from the Tomatin family, others not. I have seen many letters and other documents relating to them in the Inverness archives.

The best contact may be:
Highland Council, Dept of Libraries & Leisure Services: Alistair M. Macleod, Genealogist, Inverness Library, Farraline Park, Inverness, Scotland IV1 1NH. Tel: 01463 220 330. Perhaps the Highland Council have a website with other information relating to archive deposits.

If I can offer any other ideas, do email me.

Any MacBeans or their descendants should join the Clan Chattan Association which publishes an annual journal and includes much genealogical information:
