Margaret McAuley m. 1925 Hanford MacNider (1889-1968), son of Charles Henry MacNider, banker, and May Hanford. Hanford's family were early Iowa settlers.
In 1917 Hanford was a Lt. Col. By 1925 he was the Asst. Sec of War. In 1941 asked to be re-enlisted and was promoted to the rank of Brig. Gen. In 1949 promoted to rank of Maj. Gen. of USAR. In 1956 was advanced to rank of Lt. Gen. on retired list.
Hanford also served as the ambassador to Canada. He and Margaret McAuley had issue,
