His daughter Isabella had an illigitimate daughter Jessie in 1866. Isabella then married John Livingston in 1868 in Paisley, and she died in 1874 in Paisley. In the meantime Jessie was taken in by the Cockburn family and took their surname. She worked for Coates in the mills while training as a teacher and was sent by them to Russia and eventually became governess to part of the Russian Royal Family. She died in 1908 and was buried in the family cemetery there.
