John McAlister and Ann Carmichael were married about 1778. They lived at Tarbert, and the 1841 Census records a widow Nancy McAlister aged 85 still living there. They had 10 children according to the Kilcalmonell and Kilberry parish records: a child un-named (who presumably died at birth), a daughter Neass, another un-named child, Archibald, Hector (baptised 9 April 1786 - my ancestor), Margaret, Archibald, Catherine, John and Donald. It is probable that Neass should have been Agnes, usually pronounced Annis, and the name was mis-heard by the Minister when told it by the Gaelic-speaking parents. It is also probable that the first Archibald died young and so the name was used again. Hector married Janet (Jessie) McFarlane in 1814 and it seems his brother Archibald married her sister Catherine.
