The Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, PN, Tuesday, October 3, 1876, page 1
McAlexander, S. H.

On last Saturday Captain F. H. Torbatt and S. H. McAlexander, deputy United States Marshals, attempted to arrest a “Moonshiner” Named Giles in Henry County, Tenn. He resisted and fired upon the officers, killing Torbett. Giles then fired the other barrel of his shot gun at McAlexander, the charge passing through his cloak, and fled. McAlexander arrived here this morning with the body of Captain Torbett. Giles is a desperate character, and was badly wounded recently by Deputy Marshal Gibson, in resisting arrest.
