In the privately published book "McAlexanders-A Family History", by H.H.McAlexander, G.E.Pesley & J.McA.Tomlin (Penobscot Press,Nov.2002), on pg.244 it states: "Later McAlexander Immigrants The 1860 census of Pettis Township, Platte County, Missouri, p.139 (657) show a William McAlexander (age40), stone mason, b. Ireland." Also there is a Missouri Land Patent, accessible on the internet at: http://www.glorecord.blm.gov/patentsearch/default.asp? that shows William McAlexander of Platte County, Missouri purchased one hundred twenty one and forty one hundredths acres of land located at the Northwest quarter of Section 4 in Township 51 of Range 34 at Plattesburg, Missouri on May 1, 1846. My thinking is that this William McAlexander, who would have been born in Ireland about 1820, long after the original McAlexanders, along with a brother, wife or sister, who could be your mystery J.S.McAlexander, came to America in the 1840's and settled in Missouri. Are you near where the gravestone was found? Maybe you could check the land records for who owns that particular piece of land and work backwards to the 1840's. Was that the only gravestone found or were there others? Which newspaper ran the article in it? I would like a copy of it if that would be possible. So many of these little tidbits of information gets lost or forgotten over time. That's one of the reasons I like these forums. They are a place to post this information and everyone can see them and comment on them. I love a good mystery! David M. Myers Notify Administrator about this message?
