1803: TN Deed shows a Richard McAfee in Area of NC Jas/Robt McAfee
Posted by: Carolyn McAfee (TX/AL) (ID *****6165) Date: June 04, 2012 at 13:49:35

Old deed records of Carter County, TN, Volume A, show that an individual named Richard McAfee owned land located by "vacant land on the 'spur of Buffalo Mountain' ".

There is another deed record within the same Volume A , showing Robert McAfee owned land located, also, by "vacant land on the 'spur of Buffalo Mountain' ". So...two McAfee gentlemen on the same "spur of Buffalo Mountain"...who might be this Richard McAfee...does he have a genetic relationship?

A third and most interesting deed record: 1825 record in Deed Book D shows an exchange between a John McEffee of Carter to a John Miller. John Miller, Carter County, TN agreed w/ Abraham Henry to sell salt water on his land on Indian Creek for an equal undivided 1/8 interest in 1 acre. Henry made over his rights to John McEffee of Washington County. McEffee reconveys. Signed John McEffee, proven Nov 1825; received May 1829. (Indian Creek and Greasy Creek are, now, within TN; however, in the early day, this area was actually Washington County, NC).

Note 1: Since my generational grandmother was NC Mary Twitty Miller (who married NC Robert McAfee), the name of John Miller causes me to pause and look at this record further...for there is a John Miller associated with Mary Twitty Miller's line.

Note 2: Additionally, there was a John McAfee of Washington County, TN and, researchers may recall that James McAfee Jr. and brother, Robert McAfee, owned properties in Washington County, NC, besides in other locations. One is prompted to ask if this particular John McAfee is of some type of relationship to the two aforementioned McAfee brothers who owned properties in Washington County, NC. And...to this, where exactly does a Richard McAfee fit into the picture who is in Carter County, TN?

Note 3: I have no record showing James McAfee Jr. ever actually lived in Washington County; and the information within my family is that the NC James McAfee Jr. family remained within the old Tryon...and Rutherford Counties, NC area, (today the exact area is Lincoln County, NC) and this area was further carved into other counties...and, yet, the McAfees' owned the TN properties.

I know the the James McAfees Jr. family and their third and youngest son, Robert McAfee (married Mary Twitty Miller) were within the political circles of their day and served within public offices. Being visiable in a political manner within one's community means opportunities for financial gain, generally. Perhaps that is how the ownership of the TN properties arose...the political connections of that day.
