Oliver McAfee of NC/AL/LA/AK: Fitting the Clues Together

Dear Readership:

For so long, there has been a puzzlement re the life of 1800's Oliver Cromwell McAfee, son of Abner McAfee of old Rutherford County NC, Lincoln County, NC and lastly, Cleveland County, NC.

There are two sites that will offer interesting information re Oliver Cromwell McAfee, and his life. (Sites at end of this writing.) Indeed, those researchers who are attempting to develop Oliver's line will may wish to review the information and attempt to prove the assertions.

I know that there is interest by those who belong to DAR and who have even flown to Washington D.C. from the deep south in their attempts to obtain information on Oliver McAfee and his movements and endeavors during his lifetime.

Quite by accident, when researching another matter, I found a site of McBrayer family of NC, whose daughter, Almira McBrayer married Oliver McAfee in NC. (Note: The particular McBrayer family was that of Martin McBrayer; McBrayer sold 100 acres to Oliver McAfee for $325. on 15 December 1832. I found other records of connections to other family lines related (in some manner)to James McAfees' or who were close friends of the James McAfees').

I am interested in the genealogical history of Oliver Cromwell McAfee, for it places his direct line and his children's lines in at least four early states: North Carolina, Alabama Louisana, and Arkansas. From this information, current day research will be able to uncover facts re this line of the family.

Carl B McBrayer, the well-known historian of the McBrayer family lists in his writings that Alimra McBrayer who married Oliver McAfee, also carried the Hancock surname at some point in her life; hence, the information on his site listes Almira Hancock and Oliver McAfee family as including the following issue:

1. Madison C. McAfee b. ~1826, NC

2. Roxanah McAfee b. ~1833, Lincoln County, NC married Issac H. Jacobs, 1848

3. Elizabeth McAfee b. ~1836, Talladega County, AL (note: Oliver Cromwell McAfee's brother, Judge Green Taliaferro McAfee lived in early St. Clair County, AL and later, moved a few miles to Talladega County, AL when the land opened up for settlement.

4. Amanda Drucilla McAfee b. Talladega County, AL married in Ouachita Parish, LA in mid 1850's. Note: Amanda Drucilla McAfee was married twice.

5. Mary Ann McAfee b.~ 1848, LA

Now, to this information, there is another interesting twist to the story of Oliver Cromwell McAfee within the state of LA and per the history of the Feazel Family of LA...and even per court records of the LA parish. It is this: Oliver Cromwell McAfee was married to his NC wife, Almira McBrayer, and then, Oliver married another wife, Sarah Elizabeth Feazel, who, in LA divorce papers from Oliver Cromwell McAfee stated that Sarah did not know that Oliver had a wife and family in NC until later in time....and that appears to be after Sarah and Oliver had their own family! To this later and second McAfee family, of Oliver Cromwell McAfee, there were several children and one was a son whose name I recall from memory as being Prince Albert McAfee. the other children were daughters...there were two or three, and I think only one lived to adulthood.

So, with this information, I am trying to solve this mystery....it will take time and I may have to go to some courthouses to do this, I do believe. At the site where historian Carl B. McBrayer writes his history of the McBrayer family, he also has offered forth records for the VA James McAfee family as they were in the same areas as the McBrayers in VA prior to arriving to NC! When one accesses the McBrayer site, the, scroll downwards to page 126 for the Oliver Cromwell McAfee genealogy.

If you are a researcher who has a connection or even just an interest in the research question at hand, please know that the information for the McBrayer family I found on family tree maker and information for Feazel family I located at usgwarchives.

Note: Oliver Cromwell McAfee last moved to an area in Union County, Arkansas (from Ouachita Parish, LA) and is thought to be buried near Champagnolle, Union County, Arkansas.

Here are the sites for research ... per my computer screen...and you may have to play around with the links to get them to work. If push comes to shove, just compose your own query with the information that you have from this posting. Here are the links:
