Dear Readership, I have shared this with a few researchers, but I wish to share with everyone a copy of a land plat looks it looks like; and, then, you can search for a plat of your own early family. Some who are researchers will already know about land plats, but those new to research may not have ever viewed a plat. An interesting idea: I am going to make copies of the plats maps of the early areas where my NC and GA families lived and have the maps preserved in plastic and make breakfast place mats with them! (Any teacher supply store can do this application of plastic to the photocopied plat maps. ) Having the plats as placemats, one can enjoy a wonderful cup of coffee and study the plat map and talk about them with others at the same coffe time! And, when alone, one can study a plat in great, lengthy detail! My...such might just make the most interesting Christmas present ever for those interested in his family history! Do let me know if you come up with other ideas! Share them! When I was actively teaching, I found that a concrete example of an whatever I was discussing always seemed to make the learning of new information much more meaningful and enjoyable; (I saved much of the abstractness for the math teachers!) While I am no longer teaching, and have gone on to other interests, I still do love to share information when I find very good examples of what is important to understand re a particular idea. The Boone Family site has posted such a meaningful example of Davie County, NC plat map. For sure, it is an excellent example of what a plat map should look like! Just click on the following link, and when arriving to the site, scroll just a bit downwards, and there will be the plat map! http://www.danielboonefamily.org/misc/yadkin-main.shtml Note: I was overjoyed to find that Davie County was the example used on the site by the Boones' for a couple of reasons: (1) the Boone family was in Davie County (carved from parent county... Rowan County). The Boones had some connection with the McAfees'....it is held to have been hunting connection via William McAfee, the NC Hunter. Further, from my own research, I have found that (2)there were two McAfee brothers who lived in Mocksville, NC area whose names were: James McAfee (yes, another James McAfee)who was a breeder of very fine horses, and his brother, Samuel McAfee, M.D. These two brothers were were very close and great friends with the McGuire family of Mocksville......the old McGuire home in Mocksville is still standing! The grandson of this McGuire family was noted Civil War doctor and some of his writings have been published. The later day McGuire descendants gifted the local library with resources with which to build an "historical room" at the Mocksville library which houses a small collection for the county. What about these two McAfee gentlemen? Well, their wills indicate that they did NOT mention any kinship or spouses or any type of immediate families ....and, one McAfee brother died very shortly after the first brother. A sizeable amount of the McAfee property went to the McGuire family per will of McAfee brothers. And, as I recall, the McAfees' and the McGuires' had adjoining property lines per a plat map which I saw on another occasion. Note: I found some years ago that one of these McAfee brothers had sailed from Great Britain to the U.S; apparently, the other brother had sailed at an earlier time. Another clue that I found was that one of the brothers was recorded on the Charlottesville, VA Masonic Lodge visitors roll...for a meeting or two. Also, I found Dr. Samuel McAfee listed in a physicians history of Davie County and found that he had joined in practice with a Dr. Schools in Mocksville. That was the extent of the information re Dr. Samuel McAfee in the Davie County, NC physicians' book. Note: I do recall Grandfather McAfee speaking of an early day Samuel McAfee but I do not recollect hearing a title with his name, so I have no idea, at this time, if the Mocksville, NC Dr. McAfee is of kinship to the old James McAfee Sr. family through the generations. About the same time that Dr. McAfee of Mocksville lived, there was a Dr. McAfee just southeast of Asheville, NC, so I will check re this old McAfee family, also. I think that this second Dr. McAfee's office building has been preserved per what I read. It is not a very far distance outside of southeast Asheville...I have written on this topic in earlier times. I have LONG been interested in these two McAfee brothers and have sought out clues as to their history. On my genealogical "circuit riding" in the weeks to come, I shall try to determine more re these two McAfee brothers...a complete mystery...no one seems to know anything about them! But....know that I will know SOMETHING ...even if a bit more...after my "circuit ride". Notify Administrator about this message?
